BUFFALO, NY - Los Angeles based Horizon Realty has announced the largest residential energy reduction project in Western New York History. With technical and financial assistance from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Horizon Realty’s $2.0 Million investment in Buffalo will yield an average 36% reduction in energy and water consumption. This investment is in addition to the $1.5 Million Horizon Realty has previously invested in Buffalo to upgrade, improve and renovate its numerous buildings since acquiring them in early 2006.

Horizon Realty Buffalo is implementing this project in 15 significant downtown Buffalo properties, totaling 347 apartments, many of which are in Buffalo’s Historic Preservation District and considered to be vital assets to the community and the City of Buffalo.

Horizon Realty Buffalo is committed to preserving our natural resources, reducing greenhouse emissions and helping to protect the environment, by decreasing its carbon footprint, while improving the quality of life for all its residents.

Horizon Realty Buffalo plans on achieving its goals by installing new state-of-the-art technologies including:

  • 2,084 Energy Star Windows
  • Energy Star Doors and Appliances
  • Energy Saving Fluorescent and LED lighting
  • Modern Insulation Including Revolutionary Foam Roofing
  • High Efficiency Steam and Water Boilers
  • Low-Flow Showerheads, Aerators, and Toilets

These capital improvement measures will yield annual savings in excess of 11 billion BTU’s or the equivalent of taking 108 cars permanently off the road and over 2,000,000 Gallons of Water.

Horizon Realty Buffalo’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Hananel explains, “Horizon Realty is extremely grateful for NYSERDA’s technical and financial assistance in executing innovative ecoconscious design, renovation and construction techniques. Statistics prove that green buildings will produce healthier environments and greater quality of life for all our residents. 

Horizon Realty strives to be a leader in green living and has partnered with both Buffalo Blue Bicycle and Buffalo Car Share to help its residents and the community reduce carbon emissions and provide convenient transportation. In addition, they have partnered with River Keeper, Buffalo Re-use, Go Buffalo to establish itself as the authentic leader in Green living in WNY.

Keeping and creating jobs in Buffalo was an important component to this project, therefore all the vendors and contractors hired are native Buffalonians including: Big L Windows, Town Building Systems, Williamstown Construction, J and S Mechanical, and CJ Brown Energy.
